Today, East Maitland Kiwanis joined with Maitland Neighbourhood Centre to promote awareness of White Ribbon Day by providing a free BBQ in Maitland Mall. White Ribbon is an event which men run to raise awareness to end violence towards women. The event was held with the support of male workers from Maitland City Council, Mindaribba Land Council, Telstra, Local sporting clubs, Relationships Australia and Xstrata Coal. While representatives talked to men and encouraged them to take the online oath, Kiwanis members handed out sausage sandwiches.
White Ribbon is an organisation that is working to prevent the most common and pervasive form of male violence – that towards women. All forms of violence are unacceptable. Through primary prevention initiatives and an annual campaign, White Ribbon works to change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to men's violence against women.
The White Ribbon Campaign, invites men to make a difference by swearing an Oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This Oath is not just a 'feel good' statement. It is an active commitment which promotes positive attitudes and behaviours towards women and drives signatories to, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, 'be the change you want to see in the world'.
